Let’s talk about one thing specifically – telephones. The invention of the telephone specifically has developed into mobile phones, Bluetooth and plenty of useful and cool accessories. We have the ability to communicate with one another, without having to leave the house or work!

Are you interested in the development of telephones? Where they came from? Great! Because we have produced a small timeline of the telephone, including all phone systems that have been built over the last 140ish years.

Scotsman Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone on March 10th, 1876. He is largely credited for creating this whole new era of communications. Due to his invention, he had the honour of making the first phone call, where he called his assistant and said: “Mr Watson, come here, I want you.” His invention soon grew very popular, he even had a few disputes where people claimed to be the official inventors, despite the filed patent in 1876.

By 1900, approximately 600,000 people owned a phone, and that later increased to 5.8 million by 1910. In later years I.e. present time, 2.5 billion people own phones in 2018, and it is predicted that the five billion mark will be reached by 2020. This comparison comes as no surprise to us, because back then you were only able to make calls, whereas now you can download apps that give you the capability to organise, play, shop, research, and entertain yourself overall.

Speaking of, the first mobile app was the simple game Snake on the Nokia phone, but in July 2008, Apple released it’s first 500 apps and the App Store, changing the purposed game for mobile phones completely.

Let’s rewind slightly to 1910, the ambitious engineer Nathaniel Baldwin invented the first pair of headphones. His idea impressed the US Navy who ordered 100 pairs and made him a very wealthy man. However, his fortune didn’t last very long as he went bankrupt after financially supporting the Mormon polygamous movement. It’s now 2019 and we have interpreted headphones into things like Bluetooth and wireless products.

Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (1880-1960) was famous for mostly the production of the red telephone box. His designs became well known when his K2 cast iron telephone kiosk won a Post Office sponsored competition in 1924. His design, along with the red bus, became an immediate symbol of the London city, and still is today!

Despite its popularity, only approximately 1500 telephone boxes were made, and only a few remain on the British streets today. This invention was rather useful, as it became a source for public communication for locals to use for emergency or their own leisure.

This was a big year for telephone communication and it’s technology. For one thing, VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) was invented by Alon Cohen, businessman and entrepreneur. Essentially, he helped massively change the telecommunications industry with VoIP. If you didn’t know, VoIP allows you to make phone calls anytime, anywhere, using internet-connected sources such as computers. Here at 360 Group, we still offer the latest VoIP phone systems Cambridgeshire to give you greater control of your communications.

Another huge breakthrough in 1973, in fact, probably the biggest breakthrough of the decade would be the invention of mobile phones. Martin Cooper, who worked as a senior engineer at Motorola, designed and invented a mobile phone. Little did he know that almost 50 years later, mobiles have adapted to do more than just communicate, but entertain and educate too. In this modern world, mobile phones are a necessity, as they hold the lives of their owners strongly.

Dr Jaap Haartsen invented Bluetooth technology, wireless interconnections used to exchange data from one device to another. For example, using Bluetooth you can connect your phone to a speaker, or hotspot another phone etc. It is very useful and was another huge breakthrough for the telecommunications industry.

Six Degrees was the first recognisable social media site on the Internet. Andrew Weinreich designed and built the site back in 1997, which allowed users to create a profile and make friends with other users – the basics of what a modern social media site does now.

Skip forward a decade, we have now reached the year where the iPhone was introduced to the world. In January at a Macworld Convention, inventor Steve Jobs announced the development of the first iPhone, which received a huge amount of media attention and sales when the product was released. 10 years later and iPhones are seen everywhere, including the latest release of the iPhone XR.

That is just some of the basic, iconic moments in the telecommunications and technology industry, all that have seriously impacted the way we live, work and play today!
