What does the 2030 petrol ban mean for you and UK transport?
With transport accounting for approximately a third of the nation’s emissions, the government has announced a ban on the sale of new cars and vans powered by diesel or petrol by the year 2030.
This is a significant component within the government’s ten-point climate change plan, which was revealed by Boris Johnson, intending to decrease greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050.
What is the government’s plan?
The sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles will end in 2030 as a part of the “green industrial revolution”. To help with the adjustment to electric vehicles, the government have pledged to invest more than £2.8bn in electric/hybrid vehicles and charging points. “It’s not about stopping people doing things – it’s about doing the same things differently…” Grant Shapps, the UK’s Transport Secretary, said in a statement when the plan was announced back in November 2020.
The ten-point climate change plan is all part of a greater goal -to bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come.
