Are you looking for a new smartphone to start the year off on the right foot? We’ve put a small shortlist together for you to look through which might help you make your mind as to which one to buy!

iPhone X

The smartphone that grabbed all of the headlines towards the end of last year, Apple’s premium smartphone stood out for its eye-watering price tag. It starts at £999 but is one of the fastest and most powerful devices you can buy. It has an all screen front and dual 12 MP cameras.

The iPhone X removes Touch ID, instead relying on facial recognition software to unlock your phone, which seems to have worked perfectly, despite a hiccup when it was announced on stage.

If you can look past the asking price, it is one of the best phones money can buy.

Cheapest Price: £999
Battery life: More than a day
Screen size: 5.8-inch

Google Pixel 2XL

Google’ Pixel smartphone received an upgrade in 2017, giving us the Google Pixel 2 XL. It has a larger screen, which covers most of the screen as well as coming with rear fingerprint sensors and upgrades to its rear dual camera.

The phone will also work with Google’s Assistant AI, which is able to learn how you use your phone and can respond to voice commands.

Cheapest Price: £699
Battery life: All day
Screen size: 6 inches

Samsung Galaxy S8

Arguably the most popular android phone of 2017, the Samsung Galaxy S8 has an edge-to-edge display, and more importantly for some, it has a headphone jack, something which the modern iPhones don’t have. It is also water and dust resistance.

The S8 has a number of security features including standard fingerprint scanner and facial recognition. It raised the bar for android phones last year and we are expecting an upgrade to be announced soon, possibly the S9, so it might be worth holding out for a little while if this phone interests you.

Cheapest price: £579
Battery life: 20 hours talk time
Screen size: 5.8 inches

iPhone 8

The iPhone 8 is Apple’s latest standard iPhone release, excluding the premium iPhone X. The iPhone 8 comes with wireless charging and an enhanced All Bionic processor, one of the fastest ever installed in a mobile phone. It is available in two sizes, a standard model with a 4.7inch screen or the plus version with a 5.5-inch screen.

The iPhone 8 is an upgrade in lots of little ways on the iPhone 7.

Cheapest price: £779
Battery life: All day
Screen size: 4.7 inches or 5.5 inches

OnePlus 5T

Up and coming Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus has made a real impact in the market with its brand of cut-price premium smartphones. Its latest phone, the OnePlus 5T is certainly the best smartphone around for under £500.

It still comes in at just £449 for the base model, a reasonable price considering it has 64GB of storage and a huge 6GB of RAM, making it lightning fast and able to run multiple tasks simultaneously. On top of all of that it also boasts a brilliant dual camera that gives depth and detail to pictures
