Time is ticking away for BT analogue lines…

British Telecom’s big switchover from analogue to digital is scheduled for completion by January 2027, and that’s not as far away as it sounds.

On that date, all analogue lines – or the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) – will be disconnected and everyone will need to be using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). VoIP technology uses the internet to make and receive calls, largely because it’s more reliable than the traditional analogue technology.

This isn’t to say that landlines themselves are history and that we should all switch to mobiles, but it does mean that the world of business needs to prepare for a new way of doing things. Prior to the switchover you’ll need to ensure that systems within your business are compatible with the new digital technology as it’s likely to affect a range of areas, including alarms, ATMs and any business equipment that currently uses an analogue line.
