Is Your Business Mobile Strategy Costing You More Than You Think?

For many businesses, mobile phones are simply treated as another monthly expense.

A number is allocated to an employee, a handset is provided, a contract is signed and the bill arrives every month.

But when was the last time anyone actually reviewed whether your business mobile setup still makes sense?

For growing businesses, the answer is often: not recently enough.

And that could mean you're paying for services you don't need, missing opportunities to improve productivity, or making life unnecessarily complicated for your employees.

Business mobiles are no longer just about making calls

The modern business mobile is a working tool.

Employees use their phones to access emails, customer information, cloud applications, messaging platforms, video calls, navigation, payment systems and company data.

For some businesses, the mobile phone is effectively a portable office.

That means choosing a business mobile package shouldn't simply come down to asking:

"How much does each phone cost?"

The better question is:

"What does our business actually need each employee to be able to do?"

Do all of your employees need the same package?

Probably not.

Consider a sales representative who spends most of their week travelling between customers.

Their requirements could be completely different from an employee who works predominantly from an office.

A field engineer may need generous data allowances.

A director travelling internationally may need a package designed around roaming.

A warehouse or logistics employee may need a robust handset rather than the latest smartphone.

Giving everyone the same package might appear simple, but it isn't necessarily the most cost-effective approach.

The hidden cost of unused data

One of the easiest things to overlook is unused data.

Businesses can end up with employees sitting on different contracts and allowances that were selected years ago.

Some people may regularly use almost all their allowance.

Others may barely touch theirs.

Without reviewing usage, it is difficult to know whether your business is getting value from its mobile contracts.

A proper review should look at actual usage rather than simply renewing what you already have.

What happens when employees change?

Businesses change.

People join.

People leave.

Teams expand.

Roles change.

Employees start working remotely.

Yet mobile contracts can remain exactly the same.

This is where flexibility becomes important.

Your mobile strategy should be capable of changing with the business rather than forcing the business to work around its mobile contracts.

Network coverage matters too

Price isn't the only consideration.

A cheap mobile contract isn't particularly useful if an employee regularly works in locations where the network performs poorly.

Ofcom has highlighted the importance of reliable mobile connectivity for businesses and the wider economy, while its 2026 research shows that mobile coverage and 5G availability continue to develop across the UK.

For businesses with employees working across different locations, understanding where people actually work can therefore be just as important as comparing tariffs.

Five questions every business should ask about its mobile contracts

Before renewing your business mobile contracts, ask:

1. What are we actually using?

Look at real usage rather than assumptions.

2. Are different employees being given the right packages?

One size doesn't necessarily fit all.

3. Are we paying for unused data or services?

Small amounts multiplied across a workforce can become significant.

4. Does our network work where our employees need it?

Office, home, customer sites and travel all matter.

5. Can our provider adapt as we grow?

Your telecoms provider should be able to support changes rather than create more administration.

A business mobile review could reveal more than you expect

The biggest opportunity isn't necessarily finding the cheapest mobile contract.

It is finding the right one.

A good business mobile strategy can help your employees stay productive, give your business greater control over costs and make managing your communications much simpler.

At 360Coms, we work with businesses to understand how their people actually use mobile communications before recommending a solution.

Because the best mobile package isn't the one with the biggest allowance.

It's the one that fits the way your business works.

If you haven't reviewed your business mobiles recently, perhaps it's time to ask:

Are your mobile contracts working for your business,  or is your business working
