How to avoid excessive roaming charges

With the holiday season in full swing, there’s a risk of unwittingly running up expensive data roaming bills, especially when you’re used to unlimited data at home.

At 360Coms we routinely email our clients to inform them of their data allocations and our Account Managers are on hand to help and advise. But there are still some basic steps you can take to avoid any nasty surprises.

It goes without saying that no-one wants to receive a larger-than-expected mobile bill when they get back from holiday, so it’s worth considering the following:

Check charges before you leave and – ideally – set a limit for your mobile bill

Check with us prior to setting off to see if data roaming charges apply in the destination you’re travelling to. Review how much they are and clarify any usage limits you should be aware of. We may be able to apply a spending cap to your roaming data or set a mobile bill limit for the duration of your trip.

Buy a bundle to reduce costs

Should you need to use your mobile while you’re on the move overseas, there may be offers that can help to bring down your roaming charges. This might be, for example, a daily or weekly charge that allows you to use your usual home allowance or the option to purchase roaming add-ons for a set amount of data, calls or texts. Simply ask us for details.

Turn mobile data off

One sure-fire way of limiting any roaming charges is to switch your mobile data off on each device – including your children’s – before you even arrive. Your telephony – although most likely chargeable – will still work, and you’ll be able to get online wherever Wi-Fi’s available.

Get organised with downloads

Downloading your favourite podcasts, TV shows or films at home – or using the Wi-Fi in your accommodation – will save you having to stream them on your travels.

Use the Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi is increasingly available – and often for free – so always try to connect up before you start browsing or streaming. Using WhatsApp and FaceTime will enable you to stay connected with friends and family, and these operate perfectly well on Wi-Fi. It’s also advisable to avoid data-demanding activities such as uploading photos or downloading large email attachments unless you’re hooked up to Wi-Fi.
